Connections--A Great Conference

I got back from Vegas Thursday night--tired but it was worth it. I don't know if my new book Hitchhker's Guide to Visual Studio and SQL Server was the best seller, but it was close. They sold about 45 copies and I must have signed most of them. My hand is still sore. Thanks to each and every person that walked up to me to congratuate me on the new book or to tell me how much I had helped them over the years. It's ordinary people like this that keep me going. Of course, Vegas is "interesting" as well. It's not that often that I get to walk through a casino on the way to work. I did, however, trip over someone as I was gawking at a waitress...

The Connections people put on a good show. The facilites were not as advanced as those used by VSLive but they were fine. Everything worked (for me) and they were able to accommodate my special requirements (like a cardboard box to raise up my laptop). They also treat their speakers like they really matter to the sucess of the show--this is not a universal truth for all conferences. The content was excellent, the speakers were some of the best and the food was over the top. If I didn't spend the whole time on my feet I would gain 10 lbs per show...

I am commenting on one of your prior posts, butr could not connect. Northworst airlines continues to be so bad as to be criminal. On the return leg from Cancun to Detroit after our son's wedding, we arived at the airport, as instructed at 11:00 AM. Upon checking in at Northworst, we were informed that the 2:20 PM flight was delayed until 4:00 PM and that we should be at the gate at 2:30 PM for further announcements. At the appointed time we were told of a further delay until 5:00PM. WE were assured that the plane was in the air. In addition to all of hte immediate problems, it was stated that the people we were dealing with were not Northwest employees, but a Mexican subcontracter. This post could go on interminably, as it did for us, but the sequence is important. As the day progressed, the delay lenghtened. Orther passengers with access to more information discovered that the flight was lightly sold and that there was another flight from Memphisater in the day that was also lightly sold. Finally, to no one's supprise, the Detroit plane went to Memphis and was combined with that flight. Our ordeal loasted over ten hours. When we finaly borded, we arrived at Detroit at 3:15 AM on Monday morning. After going through customs and retreiving our car, we finally arrived home at 5:15 Am. My wife, who is a teacher, had to take another day off.

Ah, I've banned Northworst Airlines from my travel plans. Of course that cuts out some of the cities where it's the only carrier--and where its agents and crews are most arrogant. I had a similar problem that I won't bore you with that pushed me over the edge last year.
I'm beginning to think that regulated carriers were better for everyone.
